Evaluation of questionnaire
I was asked to do some research about what my fellow students in college will want in a college magazine. In order to find out this information I made a questionnaire and distributed them to twenty students I tried to balance the total of male and female, but females seemed to be eager to fill it out than the males were. I wanted my questionnaire to be accurate and not rushed so females would have given me the results I wanted. I asked ten questions that were relevant for me to know what my magazine must consist of to make my fellow students happy and interested in what I have to offer in a magazine. Also I will use the information to help me make my contents page. With the questionnaire that I have conducted I have found out some interesting things. One for example is that over fifty percent of the people I asked read magazines occasionally which is interesting because before I conducted this questionnaire I thought that magazines were generally read by females and none by males so with this information I have to have topics that are suitable for both genders and the colours that I am going to use will not be too feminine. I know that interest will be shown in my magazines because with help of the fourth question I asked which was what type of magazines are you interested in and there responses will be featured in my content page which means that I can provide a little bit of everything. With the question that I asked the participants were mostly interested in music and gossip which immediately tells me that even though my magazine will be educational based that it should also feature fun stuff like entertainment. In the entertainment part will be the two subtopics that were chosen which were music and gossip. In order for my magazine to be read I have to give the pupils what they want and ask opinions on certain things for example, I asked them the question what should I name the magazine if it was to be issued they had to choose between six names. The two successful names that were picked were what’s new and The latest so any of those two will be good for me to use because they both show almost the same level of popularity. The second important question for them to ask is what colour schemes they will like to see in the magazine. The most surprising thing for me was that was many people didn’t choose the options I gave them in fact up to eight of them chose the option other. Choosing a colour will be hard for me because I don’t know if I should consider some of the options they put down or to go for the colours that got chosen the most out of my options which were green and red or pink and white. My articles have to be short and straight to the point the pupils said that they prefer short articles and I don’t want them to get bored and not read the whole magazine.
So I have discovered that pleasing everybody with this college magazine is going to be a hard thing because I only asked 20 people in the school out of more than 500 students so my answers are only a small percentage of what the college actually wants. So I could have improved my results by asking more than twenty students. The information will help to some point because I do have a general outlook on what should go in my contents page. Before I did the questionnaire I was clueless in what I should put in my contents page.

Textual Analysis for college magazine

The college magazine front cover consists of a lady doing a science experiment and enjoying it as well. The picture seems like it has been taken in a science lab. This could mean that the college specifies in science or science just seems to be a popular subject at the college. The woman in this front cover is also wearing goggles which show us that the experiment is exiting and can be very dangerous. There are also a lot of chemicals in front of her. In the background of the woman seems to be a diagram explaining something scientific I do not know for sure because the image is quite a blur. The background is white because the whiteboard with the diagram is white. Behind the woman is the heading “Beloit” which I found out that it is the name of a city on the border of Illinois. The heading is also white but it seems to be very bright. The font is bold but it is not stated in capital letters. The cover lines is written in white apart from one which is written in green it does not seem very important because it is very small writing. Mainly everything seen in the picture is white apart from the clothes the female is wearing. There does not seem to be a barcode on the front of the magazine this could be because it is at the back or it could be that the magazine is free. This magazine cover is different from the other magazines that I am use to because it is very simple and ordinary and it does not grab my attention like other magazines. This is why there is not a lot to say about it because there is not a lot of colours so I cant say much about the cover. Maybe I could say that they made the reason why it is simple is to tell everybody that does not know the college that the college is simple and straight forward and colours and decoration does not matter that focusing on education is the key to success. I think the magazine is about what is happening in the school and when it will have nothing to do with entertainment or anything because it would have said that on the front page as a coverline. A female is on the front so that can mean that the majority that go to the school are female also the female has a friendly face so this can be represented that the college is a friendly environment.

Discuss the similarities or differences in the representation of one social group in East are East and one other film of your choice.
The social group that I will be writing about in my essay is the relationships between adults and children and the way both groups are represented. I will be comparing this particular social group with the way adults and children are represented in “Bend it like Beckham” and in “East is East” because both films represent this social group is very similar in some ways and also quite different as well. I will not go into much detail at the moment with that but it will be revealed later on in my essay. “East is East” is about a Muslim family and “Bend it like Beckham” is about a Sikh family but in both films the children rebel which is what I will be writing later on in the essay.
In East is East, the family appears to be a unconventional Muslim family because the children do not take their religion seriously but as for the father, (George) he seems to take his religion quite seriously I use the word “quite” because he is not as righteous as he thinks he is and makes out to be. His children and his wife, really fear him and do everything they can to please him. The reason why I say that the children are unconventional Muslims because in the first scene it starts of with all the children (Meenah, Sajid, Manner, Tariq, Saleem and Abdul)and mother Ella participating in a Catholic parade that is going on in their street the whole family is enjoying themselves which is fine if they are not a strict Muslim family they to they know that from other peoples point of view it could seem that they are Catholic but as soon as Ella spots her husband George, they all have to hide because they know that he will be angry and disapprove of them being their because they are not Catholics. George feels as if he is the dominant male, so he wants his family to follow HIS religion, as he also feels that he is the most important member of the family. George’s family morals are also seen as over powering and strict, this is probably the reason his children and his wife, do not conform to his religion, as they feel that, George’s religion is the reason why he is so strict. We know this because, in one scene of “East is East” we see the children running away from the “Mosque van”. The mosque van is the van in which takes the children to the place they hate most; the mosque. George see’s his children running away from the van, which causes George great frustration and causes him to hit and call his children “Bastards”. Also they would not want to get on the angry side of their father.
Also in the first scene it shows us that the children are very rebellious but hide it from their father. We know this because there is also a scene in “East is East”, when the children are rebelliously eating bacon which is against the Muslim religion. Although bacon is against the Muslim religion, we can also say that the children do this just to test their dad’s patience, although they are scared of him. This is the same for “Bend it like Beckham”. The children are rebellious. The main character, which is Jess Bhamra, is rebellious because she wants to play football and her parents do not approve of her decision to play football and think it’s a “mans game” the Tariq and Abdul are rebellious because they don’t to have an arrange marriage. Saleem rebels because he wants to do art and lies to his father because he knows that he will disapprove and that he will be punished. The only son that does everything his father tells him and also takes his religion seriously is Maneer and because he does what he does his siblings call him Ghandi because they believe that he is too righteous and to good. Unlike the others Maneer wears a taqiyah where as the rest wear religious clothing when they are forced to go to the mosque.
Religion seems to play a huge part in both films because it is religion that makes everybody act the way they do this includes the adults and the children. If George wasn’t as strict as he is then maybe the children will not be keeping things from him and they can be a happy family. In Bend it like Beckham Jess is still religious and wears the sari so embracing her culture is not really the problem it is her playing sport is what her family does not like they want her to further her education instead. As for East is East they do the Meenah does the complete opposite in the second scene when her elder brother was getting married she had to wear a sari and she said “I look stupid in this” which shows that she is not use to wearing the traditional clothes and hates it a lot.
In both films Asians are represented as a community that most or maybe all of them go through the process of an arrange marriage. It seems to be a common thing in both films. In Bend it like Beeckham it is not of great importance but it is still shown as for East is East it seems to be the only option for the children and it causes caos in the family.

Introduction
My name is Gloria Ogunmakin right now I am in the middle of making a magazine front cover which is meant to be influenced by the college that I go to. So far I am at the stage of just taking our photograph which was quite fun but very difficult because the sun was getting in the way so the pictures came out quite blurry, at first so we had find different spots outside where the sun was not so much. Another difficulty that I had was that the picture that I had to take had to be a medium close up,Which was not that simple because it was either I took the picture too close or too far out which meant that I had to take the photos over and over again. I think that it was a good thing taking the pictures again and again because I became quite familiar with the camera and my pictures came out very good. I have not really thought about the colours that I will be using for my front cover but I think that I might use green because it will go well with the tree in the picture because it is a big importance in my photo. I can not say exactly what will be in my content page because I do not know what will be in my magazine yet. The next stage that I will be doing is a textual analysis of another college magazine which will give us an idea of how my magazine will look like.
